Marc was born in August 1987 with Down syndrome, a genetic condition that can affect learning and development. But for Marc, this was never something that held him back. With a determined spirit, a love for sport, and the unwavering support of his family, Marc has achieved more in his life than many could dream of — from winning hundreds of medals across the globe to meeting royalty and stepping into the MMA ring to honour his father.
Marc’s Incredible Journey: Special Olympics Champion to MMA Fighter
Early Life and a Growing Passion for Sport
Marc spent his early years in mainstream school, but at the age of 7, it was decided that he would benefit from a more tailored learning environment, and he moved to a special needs school. It was shortly after, at the age of 8, that Marc joined the Special Olympics — a decision that would go on to shape the course of his life.
Marc began competing in various sports including swimming, skiing, tenpin bowling, and athletics. His dedication and natural talent quickly became clear, and over the years, he accumulated hundreds of medals in local, national, and international competitions.
Representing Great Britain
In 1999, Marc travelled to the United States to compete in an international athletics competition, proudly bringing home medals in the shot put, 25m run, and relay events. Just a few years later, in 2003, his strength in swimming earned him a spot on Team GB at the World Games in Dublin. There, Marc won a silver medal in the 50m freestyle and two bronze medals in the 25m backstroke and relay.
Royal Recognition and Celebrity Moments
Marc’s sporting success led to recognition beyond the podium. He was invited to Clarence House to meet Prince Charles and also enjoyed afternoon tea at 10 Downing Street with then Prime Minister Tony Blair and his wife Cherie. As a world-class athlete, he was also invited to David and Victoria Beckham’s World Cup Party at their home, famously dubbed ‘Beckingham Palace’.
Another memorable moment came when Marc attended a special lunch at London’s Hilton Hotel with Eunice Kennedy-Shriver, the founder of the Special Olympics and sister to U.S. President John F. Kennedy. It was a poignant meeting, as Eunice had also been inspired by a family member with Down syndrome.
A Life of Travel and Triumph
Marc’s journey in sports has taken him far and wide. His skiing competitions have seen him travel across Austria, Italy, Germany, and Scotland, collecting more medals and experiences along the way. Despite the travel and the intense training, Marc always showed up with enthusiasm and dedication.
Coping with Loss and Finding Strength
New Year’s Eve 2019 brought heartbreak for Marc when he lost his dad to cancer. It was a huge loss, and one that was difficult for Marc to fully comprehend. But even in grief, Marc found strength through purpose. A family friend, who happened to be an MMA fighter and promoter, invited Marc to take part in a charity MMA fight in memory of his father.
Marc had always dreamt of becoming a WWE wrestler, so this opportunity ignited a spark. With the support of his local MMA gym, who sponsored his fight night, Marc trained for weeks, learning the ropes of MMA. On the big night, he gave an incredible performance and won the ‘Peter Curtis Memorial Belt’. The event raised money for The Isobel Hospice, making the night not only memorable but meaningful.
Life Today: Fitness, Family and Love
Marc continues to live a full and vibrant life. He regularly attends fitness classes at Guru Fitness and is supported by various day services like Inspire in Hoddesdon, where he continues to develop his life and social skills. He also spends time working on a farm, coppicing in the woods, and tending to allotments through Mudlarks — an initiative that brings purpose and connection through nature.
Outside of his busy schedule, Marc is deeply devoted to his family. He is one of four siblings, an uncle to four nieces, four nephews, and a great-niece. Family time, whether at home or at their holiday home in Point Clear, is something Marc cherishes. He has also been in a loving relationship with his girlfriend for the past nine years, showing that with love and support, anyone can experience meaningful relationships and connection.
A Life that Inspires
Marc’s life is a celebration of resilience, community, and the belief that anything is possible with the right support. From standing on global podiums to stepping into the MMA ring in honour of his father, Marc continues to defy expectations and prove that limitations are only what we allow them to be.
Through sport, family, love, and endless determination, Marc’s journey is a shining example of what it means to live life to the fullest.
