Magician Damien O’Brien has travelled the world, performed on Britain’s Got Talent, and even created his own BBC3 show. But away from the stage, Damien places just as much importance on creativity, balance, and protecting his peace. We spoke with him about how he stays inspired, and why having your own space is vital for wellbeing.
Damien O’Brien | Exclusive Interview | Lifestyle Pocket Guide
What inspires your creativity?
Lots of things, movies, comics, and Star Wars for sure. But mostly, the people I keep around me. I only surround myself with people who lift me up. No negativity. Protecting your peace is everything. Social media helps too; it sparks ideas and keeps me thinking.
How do you keep your performances fresh?
I never believe I know it all. If a brand comes to me with a product, like a drinks can, I’ll think of multiple creative ways to use it. That mindset keeps things fresh.
What advice would you give young people about following a passion?
Be patient. It won’t happen overnight. You’ll face obstacles, but those setbacks are lessons. Collaborate with others, share ideas, and don’t lose the love for what you do.
Do you have a man cave or creative space?
Yes, it’s my escape. After a long day, I’ll put on headphones and spend a couple of hours there. It’s where I recharge and switch off from the world.
How important is having that space?
Very. When you’re in your own space, away from distractions, it unlocks creativity. Everything you need is right there, push a button and go.
How do you switch off outside of performing?
Gaming and cinema are my go-tos. More cinema than gaming, actually. A couple of hours with the phone away, immersed in a story, it’s the best way to reset.
What’s next for you?
I’m performing in London at The Magician’s Table, created by Ian Sharkey, who’s a big deal in the magic industry. Alongside that, I’m working on private events, collaborations, and online content.
